  1. Althea Gibson

Sixty-one years ago today, in 1950, Althea Gibson claimed her spot in history by becoming the first African-American to open on the United States tennis tour. On August 22nd, the officials from the USLTA (United States Lawn Tennis Association) welcomed Gibson into their championship, which is an annual occurring event that takes place in New York. Althea Gibson grew up in Harlem, and always had a natural athletic ability. At the young age of fourteen-years-old she began to play tennis, and just a short year after, she won her very first tournament. It is well known that Gibson went on to achieve an endless amount of accomplishments after her first New York State girls’ championship. Today, Althea Gibson is recognized for not only becoming the first African-American in the U.S. tennis tour, but for also setting the bar at high expectations for other, and all African-American tennis players.

  2. David Hume was a Influential political philosopher who died Edinburgh, Scotland in 1776. David Hume wrote his essay on Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth. Yes i would say he had an impact because the American Revoultion was barely underway but I think he affected the ideas of the drafters of the federal Constitution in 1787. I think people was ignoring the interest and Hume believed that the only way to control faction, was to create small republics, where the common interest of all would be self-evident.

David Hume was a Scottish philosopher known for his philosophical disbelief of large republics. He is often regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume is often grouped with enlightenment thinkers such as John Locke, and George Berkeley. Hume's essay "Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth" played a major role in shaping the basis of our government today. President James Madison studied Hume's theories closely and rejected them because he believed that creating a "large republic" would be more beneficial because then not one group could want "tyrannize" an opinion. I believe though that Hume's idea did help shape the American Revolution because his was of thinking got the drafters of the Constitution to think of what would be best for the recently freed United States.

  4. David Hume is a great history figure. David Hume lived a good life, but after two years of illness, he passed away. "I did not mind not existing before I was born, why should I mind not existing after I die?" – David Hume. He was born May, 7 1711 in Edinburgh, Scotland and deceased on August, 25 1776. He lived to be the age of 65. His religion was Western Philosophy. David Hume was known to be the most important philosopher to ever write in English. I think he had an impact on the American Revolution because even though he wasn't there to see everything happened and how everything came to be, his story, “Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth" impacted ideas of the federal Constitution in 1787. He was a wise man.

  5. David Hume(May,7 1711-August,25 1776) was most respectfully known as an influential political philosopher, economist, historian, and essayist. He was known especially for his philosophical empiricism and skepticism. Hume had a lot of people that did not agree with his beliefs or writings, but he brushed it off and now is known as one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy. He argued against the existence of innate ideas, for example that instead that humans have knowledge only of things they directly experience. He began with his, " A Treatise of Human Nature" which really looked into examining the psychological basis of human nature. He seemed to be very interested in the human behavior which later helped out greatly for the ideal government. I believe that his essay,"Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth" benefited the federal Constitution and his logical theories help shape the government.

  6. David Hume was an 18th century political theorist who died in Scotland before the American Revolution had barely started. His theories on a government are very different on what James Madison wanted for the united states government, however Madison studied Hume’s theory on government for quite a while until he “respectfully rejected” the theory . Hume’s theory stated that the ideal government would consist of smaller republics across the land so that the people’s voices wouldn’t be silenced and that there would be no tyranny. Madison contradicted this by stating even though there were small republics, “one or two individuals might be tyrannized by what the majority deemed to be the common interest.” Madison wanted a large republic so that there would be so many opinions that the country would be forced to find a way to coincide peacefully.

I never heard of David Hume before, but after reading this article I was impressed. I somewhat liked his ideas of the small republics to prevent factions from taking power but that sounded a lot like the Confederacy, and we all know what happened to that idea. But still, he did further the ideas of small government by influencing the founders, particularly Madison. Madison, however, disagreed with this idea even after carefully studying them because he believed that the only way to prevent factions from seizing control was to have a huge republic to deter them. In my opinion, both Hume and Madison were both wrong. It is possible for factions to seize power whether the government is centralized or not; it can even happen in the United States if "we the people" are not constantly vigilant.

  8. David Hume was a Scottish philosopher and also historian that had a great impact in the American Revolution. Hume was very interested in religion, in fact, he wrote several essays on his religious belief and background. He wrote an essay named "Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth" at the beginning of the American Revolution. In 1775 Hume was diagnosed with deathly but not painful disease. In August of 1776 David Hume died from colon cancer. His remains are now buried in the Waterloo Palace that is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. Although Hume was not alive to experience much of the American Revolution, he did influence it in a particular way. I believe that David Hume affected the Revolution in a way because by writing his essay he influenced the ideas of the drafters of the federal Constitution in 1787.

In my opinion I think David Hume did impacted the American Revolution. The reason I believe he impacted the American Revolution is because the way he expressed on his letter how Government should be managed; by creating small republics which will have an interest in a certain part of the population. But at the same by not having enough power to withstand the demands the people will implant over them. Therefore, president James Madison analyzing Hume`s ideas realized that the best way to run government was to create a big republic which will be interested in the majority of the needs of the population, so that way ideas will be supported and not tyrannize because government will have the center power to implant them and make them be follow. Even though always opposition will exist at the end they will end up agreeing with the ideas planted because government will have the central power and the last word.

Davie Hume was a really important philosopher in the 18th century who dies in Edinburgh, Scotland, on the year 1776.
He died when the American Revolution just start, he wrote an essay "Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth" in which affects the federal Constitution in 1787. James Madison contemplated the proportion but at the end he don’t accepted. Hume, believed that the only way to control faction was creating small republics,
But Madison thought that the best way was creating latge republics or even small thats why he reject the Hume proposal. He thought that United States would, be better like that.

He died of colon cancer in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1776. Although Hume died when the American Revolution was barely initiated, his essay, “Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth” highly affected the ideas of the drafters of the federal Constitution in 1787. Hume believed that the only way to control faction was to create small republics. Doing this no majority block could take control at the expense of a significant opposition. It is true that not every British or Continental intellectual work crossed the Atlantic and David Hume’s were no exception. The philosopher’s life spanned the gap between the era when one generation of Americans were fighting faithfully for the Crown during the War of Spanish Succession to the time when the next generation of Americans would take up arms against the Crown. Concluding my reading and research I would say David Hume’s did impact the American Revolution.

This inspired drafts for the federal Constitution in 1787. Humes also believed that the only way to control special interests was to create small republics. This idea no majority could block or take control of minorities, this way. Madison first rejected Humes ideas in creating large and small republics. Madison believed in his eyes that fraction would be a positive force in the United States. In this way, he took this term ad presented it to the new American system of federalism.

On August 25, 1776, a great philosopher had decreased tragically. This political philosopher was David Hume. Hume's essay "Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth" had affected the many ideas of the drafters of the federal Constitution. I would say David Hume did had an impact on the American Revolution because most political theorists of the 18th century believed that the only way to control faction was just to create small republics, so it can be self-evident. Madison wanted a large republic, so many people favored for him than David Hume. I think both of them were wrong because its not really possible for factions to take over power whether the government is in control or not.

  15. Born on April 26, Edinburgh Scotland, David Hume was a brilliant persona in many ways. David studied in the University of Edinburgh and after years he decided to work on his “Treatise of Human.” The treatise was published anonymously, and was split in III parts. Part I; explains how everything works the capability we have in understanding. Part II; based on the passion of men and Part III; was mostly on the emotional and sentimental part of a human being. Hume described how the brain works and took the science of human nature to a new level. Historian, Writer, Economist, Philosopher, and most importantly a human being himself with flaws also. I personally believe he made an outrageous impact on the American Revolution by writing "Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth" but the world overall due to his outstanding studies.

I say this because; his writings made these men have a different point of view towards the government they were planning on creating. One of these men that considered his ideas was James Madison. Madison observed all of Hume’s ideas and theories, but didn’t find them right. He respectfully rejected his logics and decided to take a term—fraction- and make it a benefit to the new American system of federalism.

  18. After reading the article about David Hume I learned that he was an influential political philosopher. David Hume proposed an ideal government and the prevention of faction as he constructed his argument in favor of the Constitution in "Federalist X". He also wrote an essay which greatly affected the ideas of the drafters of the federal Constitution in 1787. I think David Hume did have an impact in the American Revolution. I think that his proposal had awakened new thoughts in people like James Madison which would help avoiding tyranny from others. They then created large republics to avoid the possibility of tyranny.

David Hume influenced the drafters of the Federal Constitution in 1787, with his essay "Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth", particularly James Madison. I would say that, yes he did have an impact on the American Revolution. Hume thought that, in the new government, we should have small republics in order to prevent factions (a group within a larger group) from taking up a large amount of power. Madison respectfully disagreed with Hume, stating that the solution was to create huge republics, so that the republics would still be balanced even if there are a huge number of factions. Madison thought that factions would be a positive force in the new United States.

  22. (E:Block)David Hume was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 26, 1711. He was a philosopher, historian, economist, essayist, and was especially known for his philosophical empiricism and skepticism. Growing up, his parents expected him to follow in the family tradition of a career in law, but by the age of eighteen, after finishing university, he found law very boring and unsatisfying. He however found a love for literature and philosophy and consumed himself in his studies. I think David Hume had a huge impact on the revolution. Despite the fact that his theories were rejected by the likes of James Madison, he did present an idea that made people involved in the constitution think about the way they wanted to run the country. If it weren’t for the proposal of David Hume, who knows what kind of laws we would have settled for as the constitution of our country. This was probably the earliest form of the legislative branch of our present-day government.

In my opinion, I think that Hume did have an impact on the American Revolution. Clearly, Hume did have an impact on the American Revolution because of all of his ideas, his essays, and the way he viewed human nature. 33. David Hume was a political philosopher who passed away during the American Revolution. He was an instrumental element in influencing the drafters of the federal Constitution in 1787 with his essay "Idea of a Perfect Commonwealth." One of the people who took his ideas the most seriously was James Madison. Madison carefully studied Hume's ideas regarding an ideal government, and more specifically, payed close attention to the issue of faction in republics. While establishing a new government, he attempted to think of ways that faction could be prevented. like many others in the 18th century, he thought that the best idea was to have smaller republics with common interests so that people who chose to rebel would not pose a major threat to the republic. However, after much examination and thought, he realized that the real answer was the total opposite - having bigger republics. This would cause diversity in the people, and would create a republic filled with different interests and beliefs. Through this, people would be forced to find a way to live in peace, and thus, having a positive outcome, instead of a negative one.

David Hume was a Scottish political philosopher. Hume was also an essayist and because of one of the essays that he did the ideas of the drafters of the federal Constitution in 1787 was greatly affected. I think that Hume did have an impact on the American Revolution. I say this because John Madison contemplated Hume’s proposals for the government and his thoughts of preventing faction. Because of this Madison thoroughly thought about that situation and wanted to avoid tyranny. Hume thought that with small republics there would be common interests and everyone would be self-evident. Madison on the other hand said that larger republics would be better because in a small republic if 1 or 2 individuals would be tyrannized them all would be lost but in bigger republic there would be more differences in interests that the people will be obligated to find a common interest and settle with one thing that can be agreed on by everyone.
