  1. William Tecumseh Sherman was an American soldier, educator and author. He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Sherman was acknowledged for his fantastic military strategy. He served under General Ulysses S. Grant during campaigns that led to the fall of the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg. He later led his troops to the capture of the city of Atlanta, the success that led to the election of Abraham Lincoln. Sherman was in charge of the U.S. Army's engagement in the Indian Wars over the next fifteen years. He was considered a great soldier.

  2. William T. Sherman was an American soldier who later was known as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The most important achivment that Sherman did was getting all the North and clearing all the "Mississippi of confederate resistance". He is the only man that recived the Thanks of the congress during the war. After he was almost done on wating for Smith, one that was at his charge he wrote "For five days, 10,000 men worked hard and with a will in that work of destruction... Meridian, with its depots, storehouses, arsenals, hospitals, offices, hotels, and cantonments no longer exists" that I think is a really hard part of this.

  3. General William T. Sherman was a general who led the campaign from Vicksburg, Mississippi, with the goal of destroying the rail center at Meridian and clearing central Mississippi of Confederate resistance. General Sherman's impact on the Civil War was the success that he brought to the Union side during the war. He also did capture the Meridian and destroyed railroad and storage facilities. Greatest accomplishment by General Sherman was taking notes and using the knowledge he learned to create devastating results in the state of Georgia at the time. To conclude I’d like to say General Sherman is a wise for taking notes and learning his opponents skills to better himself and get the upper hand.

  4. General William T. Sherman was an American soldier, businessman, educator and author. He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War.On February 14,1864 General William T. Sherman entered Meridian, Mississippi, during a winter campaign that served as a precursor to Sherman's March to the Sea campaign in Georgia. Sherman launched the campaign from Vicksburg, Mississippi, with the goal of destroying the rail center at Meridian and clearing central Mississippi of Confederate resistance. Ultimately, Sherman failed to clear Mississippi of Rebels, and the Confederates repaired the rail lines within a month. An advantage or bright side from Sherman's failure was he learned how to live off the land and took notes on how to strike a blow against the civilian population of the South. He used that knowledge with devastating results in Georgia later that year.

  5. William Sherman was the son of a judge. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on February 8th 1820. He studied at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and after joining the United States Army he was sent to Florida fight in the Seminole War. He was an American soldier, business man, educator, and author. Sherman was a key Union General in the Civil War. He was applauded for his astonishing military strategies.
His ambition was to destroy the rail center at Meridian and to clear central Mississippi of Confederate resistance. “Sherman believed this would free additional Federal troops…” Sherman’s greatest accomplishment is capturing Meridian and destroying railroads and storage facilities. His tactics and strategies gave the Union an advantage. His heart to serve, under Ulysses S. Grant, probably had something to do with it.

  6. Sherman was a general for the union during the Civil War. He also took place in the first attack against the Confederates, which was the Mississippi campaign. Although General Sherman played a good part in this battle, it is commonly overlooked by the March to the Sea campaign. I say General Sherman had a big impact because he was a great general and leader for the Union. He was a determined person that knew what was at stake if they had anything less than a victory. I would say Sherman’s greatest accomplishment was the March to the Sea campaign. Many thought that this would be the end of the war. So General Sherman pushed, giving orders to pretty much destroy everything in sight, which lead to a great victory.

He is noted as one of the first Union officers to distinguish himself at the Battle of Bull Run. Also, he was the only man to twice receive the Thanks of Congress during the Civil War-first for Chattanooga and second for Atlanta and Savannah. William Sherman was a union General during the Civil War. Sherman was the one that started the campaign for Vicksburg, Mississippi. The goal of this was to have the Mississippi RIver. This was the first attempt that the union had made aiming for total warfare. They did not only aim at military things but also at the will of Southern people. Sherman led thousands of troops to march. Clearly, General Sherman was very important to the Civil War and contributed. He was a very good leader in the union. Even though his plan in the beginning didn't necessarily work about the whole Mississippi thing, he eventually used all the knowledge he acquired from this to tear up Georgia later in the same year.

  15. On the 14th of February, 1864, Union General William Sherman marched into Meridian, Mississippi in the middle of heavy rains with about ten thousand troops by his side. His plan was to completely devastate the south by not only attacking the military objectives, but also attacking the "will of the Southern people". He ended up capturing Meridian, but his reinforcements, led by General Smith, didnt reach him in time.
"For five days, 10,000 men worked hard and with a will in that work of destruction... Meridian, with its depots, storehouses, arsenals, hospitals, offices, hotels, and cantonments no longer exists" - General William T. Sherman
The campaign wasnt a total waste of time though; During his time in Meridian, Sherman learned how to live off the land and how to strike at the civilian population of the South. He used this knowledge to execute his attack on Georgia with devastating results... This was probably his greatest accomplishment.

He captured Meridian and destroyed the railroad and storage facilities. He waited for Smith, but he never got to Meridian. On February 21, Confederate troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest wailed Smith at West Point, and dealt the Federals a resounding defeat. (http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/sherman-enters-meridian-mississippi) Smith returned to Memphis, and Sherman turned back towards Vicksburg.

  33. General William Tecumseh Sherman was one of the most zealous of all Union Generals, and believed firmly in punishing the South, and removing their will to fight by targeting civilian infrastructure.  His methods of warfare later became known as the tactics of total war, or the belief that war isn't only against the troops on the battlefield, but also against the industries and transportation systems that supply them.During the U.S. Civil War, as commander of the Union Army’s division of the Mississippi, William Tecumseh Sherman gathered 100,000 troops for the invasion of Georgia and captured and burned Atlanta and began his devastating March to the Sea to capture Savannah, leaving a trail of near total destruction. Often credited with the saying “War is hell,” he was a major architect of modern total war. Sherman saw more clearly than any other Civil War general that modern warfare was completely unlike its 18th century counterpart. Since the Civil War was a war between free peoples, Sherman maintained that only by breaking the war spirit of the enemy, noncombatant as well as combatant, could victory be won hence the march through Georgia and South Carolina. In fact, he is sometimes credited with reinventing war, stressing the destruction of the infrastructure necessary to support an enemy army more than the killing of its soldiers, and establishing rules of conflict that are still in effect today.

  38. William Tecumseh Sherman was a Union Genral who began as an average man, but would soon become a household in what we now know as the history of the Civil War. This however was no walk in the park. By capturing the Meridian, Sherman was able to punch a hole in the Confederacy's "ego" so to speak. He and his men were able to destroy hospitals, roads, soldiers, etc. The south was effected by this, even though it seemed to be on sucn a small scale. I believe his greatest accomplishment in the Civil War was when he was able to capture Atlanta, Georgia. This was a huge, seemingly insurmountable loss to the South, thus making General Sherman's name well-known
